Marty Michaels

Grants Manager

Marty Michaels is a fundraising and communications strategist who specializes in messaging for diverse audiences—including current and prospective donors, grant makers, charities, government agencies, and the media.

For nearly 20 years, Marty was assistant managing editor at The Chronicle of Philanthropy, in Washington, D.C., a national newspaper that’s considered the “Wall Street Journal” of the nonprofit world.

She also served as Development Associate at Ipas, a global women’s health NGO based in Chapel Hill, N.C., where she raised money and taught development principles to country teams in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Vietnam, and India. Immediately prior to joining JFCS, Marty was the sole Development Writer for national programs at the National Audubon Society headquarters.

A  transplant from the East Coast who grew up in Germany, Marty is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in English; did graduate work at Georgetown University; and earned an M.A. in communications from Johns Hopkins University.

Outside the office, Marty enjoys Scrabble and other word games, obsessively following the news, and plotting her next international trip: next up, Portugal and Malta.
